For clothes, bed linens, and other soft items I used vacuum sealed bags, placed in plastic storage containers. But for books, kitchen utensils, and similar items I used cardboard boxes.
I was surprised by the differences in various packing boxes and tapes, in terms of both quality and odor. Some boxes and tapes had such strong chemical scents that they were unusable, at least by me. I initially ordered boxes and tape online, to be shipped to me, so I could avoid an in-person visit to the local box store, where I expected to be challenged by other people’s fragrance. But after my first bad experience with stinky materials that were shipped and unrealistic to return I realized I had to go to the local store. As I packed, my need for more boxes and tape increased, so in the end it was more efficient to brave the store, identify products I could tolerate, and then return for more as needed.
I doubt that this is what professional movers do, but at the bottom of each box I sprinkled diatomaceous earth, to discourage both bugs and moisture. I used bubble wrap to insulate all six sides of the boxes. I expected to have my things in storage for two years, but it turned out to be four years. When I finally unpacked my belongings and moved them into my new home, there were no bugs and everything was dry.
