November 22, 2022: Raised garden beds

I managed to assemble ten raised garden beds before the first snowfall, but then I ran into another pandemic supply chain problem. The nursery ran out of the soil I was using and does not expect another shipment until Spring. Nonetheless, I was able to put in my first winter crop — garlic.

The green beds were supposed to evoke ocean waves, complementing the aquatic theme on the ceramic bench in the front yard, but they came out looking like cupcakes. They will look better when they are surrounded by rosemary and thyme, with vegetables sprouting out of the tops.

In addition to repurposing the leftover metal roofing panels, I used leftover Faswall blocks from the house construction to make a strawberry planter, and I turned a poorly designed and unsafe tumbling composter into a planter for pumpkins. The scarecrow was cobbled together using an old Grateful Dead T-shirt, a wind spinner, and a stack of free trial/sample DVDs and CDs that came in the mail in the 90s and that I saved, thinking I would do something creative with them someday.
