A nontoxic house that is safe for a chemically sensitive person is not necessarily a “green” building. I do not react to concrete and I relied upon it heavily in building my home, but concrete is not a “green” material. Nonetheless, there is some overlap between green building materials and materials that are safe for people who are chemically sensitive. These lists are helpful references when selecting materials or explaining your vision to an architect or contractor.
The Red List is a list of “worst in class” chemicals that are used in the construction industry and that are known to be harmful to humans and/or the environment. The list is regularly updated, and lists each material by Chemical Abstract Registry Number (CASRN).
