Five years after I moved into my house I finally installed my first shelf. There are five (possibly six) areas in my house that require shelving. I told the project manager I wanted to build the shelves myself because I have been interested carpentry since I was a young girl, helping my father with home improvement projects.
I started with the shelf in the entryway/mudroom because I thought it would be the simplest. It took much longer than I expected, but I learned a lot. I took four woodworking classes at the local makerspace, and then took four trips to the woodworking shop to fine tune the pieces for the shelf.
The 2018 architectural plans called for an offgas room in the garage, but by the time the garage was built in 2023 I had become so much less reactive that I no longer needed a separate offgas room. Instead, the entryway/mudroom can be used to sanitize any fragrant coats or packages that arrive. There is an ozone generator on the shelf and an interior glass bi-fold door separating the room from the rest of the house, creating an offgas chamber. When I am done running the ozone generator I can open the exterior front door, to let the space air out, before returning the bi-fold door to its place.
In addition, I installed a collapsible swinging laundry arm on my back porch, that I can use both to dry my laundry and to sanitize clothes when they have picked up fragrance. I have discovered that hanging fragrant clothes out in the rain and letting them dry in the forest air does an excellent job of de-stinking them.
