Lucy went for her first ferry boat ride today. Yesterday she saw horses for the first time. Ewan continues to complain, and I am stressed finding a new home, but Lucy is interested in everything.
We took the ferry to Vashon Island, which was high on my list of possible places to live. But there was an acrid edge to the air that made my chest constrict. I had the same reaction a few days ago in Port Townsend, another place high on my list. It is much easier to breathe in Poulsbo, where I am staying while I look for a home. Checking the Environmental Protection Agency’s “your community” function, I see that I am not imagining things. The cancer risk from inhaling airborne pollutants is 58 parts per million in both Vashon and Port Townsend but it is only 39 in Poulsbo. (It is 109 in Venice, my current home.) I am crossing Vashon Island and Port Townsend off my list.
